Steve Robinson (Chair) – Cheshire West and Chester Council

Steve Robinson is the dynamic and inspirational leader of the new unitary authority of Cheshire West and Chester. He has positioned the organisation as one of the country’s most progressive and forward looking councils.

The council launched in 2009 and Steve has stamped his mark on the local government landscape by creating an energetic and innovative council that is making people sit up and take notice.

He sees this role as a rare and unique opportunity to make his vision of delivering truly customer centred services a reality.

Becoming Chief Executive of a brand new council created from four predecessor authorities has been his single biggest challenge to date, but one he has relished and made his own.

Throughout his public and private sector career, which began in 1975 as a Trainee Environmental Health Officer for Coventry City Council, Steve has achieved some impressive successes.

He is noted for the way in which he turned around a number of failing services at Stoke-on-Trent, developed a 1 star to 3 star and most improved Council in 2007.

He developed and delivered a strategy for the renewal of Liverpool City’s housing stock that saw 48,000 houses transferred to a number of Housing Associations leading to major change programme improving the quality of housing services in Liverpool.

He graduated from the University of Ashton graduating with BSc in Environmental Health while working at Coventry. In 1986 he moved to Wolverhampton Borough Council where rose quickly to become Chief Housing Renewal Officer in 1996.

Between 1996 and 2006 Steve moved between local authority and private sector inleading organisational roles, including Chief Executive, South Liverpool Housing; Assistant Director – Regeneration for Liverpool City Council; Director of Riverside Housing; Chief Executive, Walsall Housing Group and Director of Housing and Consumer Protection at Stoke-on-Trent City Council, eventually becoming Director of Community and Adult Services in 2005 and then Chief Executive in 2006 at Stoke.

In 2008 Steve became Chief Executive for the new shadow authority of Cheshire Westand Chester Council.

Born in Evesham in 1956, Steve Robinson attended the Abbey High School in Redditch until 1975.

Married in 1989 he and his wife, Nicola, have one son. Steve enjoys walking, gardening, cycling and golf.
